MBAM Urged for Longer Operating Hours at Construction Sites
The Selangor government should consider extending the construction operating hours from 7am until 7pm on weekdays, the Master Builders Association of Malaysia (MBAM) has urged.
Its president Tan Sri Sufri Mohd Zin said the daily procedures to scan temperatures and check in with MySejahtera before workers are allowed entry to sites take up a substantial time.
“Towards the end of each working day, construction sites would need to spend a fair amount of time to do housekeeping and clean up to ensure the safety of the sites in check.
“MBAM hopes other state governments would consider the same measures.
“With the standardisation to extend construction operating hours, it would allow the industry to be able to close in on better productivity,” he said yesterday.
MBAM, which represents close to 17,000 members in the local construction industry, said it welcomes the Selangor government’s decision to standardise operating hours for construction sites within the state from 8am to 6pm on Mondays to Saturdays.
Sufri added that construction work had been interrupted since the start of the pandemic and further affected by the various movement control orders.
“There were times that sites were not allowed to open or had been operating with a low productivity rate due to compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he said.
“Based on our observation, the industry in general experienced a total stop-work duration for at least 199 days and about 380 days of low productivity in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
“Although the construction industry in Selangor has been allowed to resume full operations since Oct 18, in line with Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan, most construction sites are keeping busy to fully utilise their operating hours to catch up with the time lost and meet deadlines in their contracts,” he added.
“However, contractors are still finding it strenuous to keep up with all the delayed construction work within a limited time,” Sufri said.
